I have been seeing a lot of funny looking wheels lately. Maybe I’m just bored when I drive and notice them more, but I feel compelled to get some thoughts on a select few out of my system. I realize you may think I am a terrible out of the box thinker, but I am only when it comes to cars, I promise. I just prefer traditional wheels.
And, since my last mention of cars, I have continued to think about a few that drove me crazy (hah! get it? drove me crazy?!). More specifically, they just made me go “HUH?” I wondered how they ever made it off the drawing board and onto the assembly line.
So here is is. My list of head scratchers.
1. Chevy HHR
I have nothing against Chevy. My first car was a 1978 Chevy Nova and it served me well. It was the most recognizable thing in town, but it was a great car tank to have.
I just don’t “get” the HHR. It’s supposed to be a crossover, but it doesn’t look like one to me. It’s certainly more car than SUV, but it has the trunk space of a station wagon without the fun backward-facing seats that I knew and loved in the 80s. I don’t hate it so much as I’m confused by it.
Plus, the gas tank is on the passenger side, which is a big two thumbs down for me.
2. Dodge Magnum
Instead of the Pontiac line going away, dear GM, I think you should do away with this guy. It clearly is having an identity crisis. Is it a hearse? A gangster car? I know the Dodge logo is a ram, but is the thing really supposed to LOOK like a battering ram?
For safety reasons, I also have a beef with this one. The blind spot is HUGE and the windshield extremely tiny. I am short, so I felt like I was sitting down IN the car.
The only plus? The rental I got had ice cold air (a must-have for July) and leather seats.
3. Scion xB
I saw a bumper sticker on one of these that said YOU JUST GOT PASSED BY A TOASTER. I mean, honestly, if the car owners themselves are making fun of the car, all hope is lost. It was silver too, so that didn’t help the toaster analogy. Is the boxy-ness necessary for tall people? So they can have extra head room? I wouldn’t know much about needing that (are the pedals close? ok!) but it’s the only reason I can think of for the shape that would be a benefit.
However, if the car actually did have a toaster in it, carby me might have to think about it. Wouldn’t that be convenient for long commutes? Instead of a glove box you’d have a bread box with all the fixins. Brilliant! Perhaps Scion could market this boxcar a little better…
For the record, here is my car. Make fun if you like! :)
What about you? What cars make you turn your head inquisitively?
